"There's nothing more demoralizing than a leader who can't clearly articulate why we're doing what we're doing." James Kouzes, Barry Pozner
While reading a recent article, I was reminded of something we've seen in both large and small companies-businesses taking a top-down approach to Cloud.
These mandates generally come in the form of, "We're moving everything to the Cloud by the end of this year (or as soon as possible!)" If this sounds unreasonable to you, read on! If you're the messenger or leader crafting these well-thought-out directives, you might want to turn back now.
There is nothing more dangerous, in a strategic move, than to exclude your organization from the rationale behind the move. When asked why a certain move is being made, most "implementers" respond with, "I don't know, to save money I guess!" There we go again with common Cloud misconceptions…
So here's a relatively short list of the answers we should all rehearse for when we are presented with a formal "Get thee to the Cloud!" mandate:
Cloud is a journey - not a destination.
Your company is not jamming everything into the Cloud the way a 12-year-old cleans his room by jamming everything into the closet. Ultimately, Cloud should be part of a longer term strategy, not the destination at the end of someone's imaginary rainbow. For many, Cloud is about escaping the maintenance and upgrades to aging IT systems and moving the organization into an agile, strategic business model. The IT department, or an InfoSystems consultant, can be your guide, but Cloud should be about helping the business become better and more competitive, not just about simplifying.
Did you consider that Cloud isn't always cheap or easy?
If the decision to move to an Azure, AWS, or IBM Softlayer didn't come with a questionnaire that addressed response time, availability, scalability, and security, you could be the next sad story told at your community's tech council meeting.
InfoSystems is in the business of migrating companies like yours to a Cloud solution. If there were an "Easy Button" for Cloud migration, we would have found it by now.
Cloud isn't perfect or consistent, no matter whose Cloud you choose.
The last half of that sentence is the most meaningful. Don't choose before you've weighed your options. At InfoSystems, we make sure you're aware of all your options, including not moving to the Cloud!
