Tony Owens - Sr. Solutions Architect, Arrow Electronics
Keith Hales - COO, InfoSystems
This special episode of Enterprise Tech Spotlight features a discussion about IBM's announcement on February 11, 2020 about IBM FlashSystem Storage. Keith Hales is joined by a special guest, Tony Owens, Senior Solutions Architect at Arrow Electronics, to unpack IBM's announcement and discuss what it means for IBM Storage customers and the storage marketplace in general.
As part of this announcement, IBM claimed an industry first by becoming the only storage vendor to consolidate its entire storage range into a single platform - IBM FlashSystem.
This move means that IBM is retiring some brands/platforms, bringing some existing hardware into a new product family, simplifying licensing, and in some cases reducing cost. Another benefit is that IBM's Spectrum Virtualize storage management software will allow companies to manage non-IBM storage products from EMC, NetApp, and others, plus Cloud storage like AWS, all in a centralized place.
The biggest result of this announcement is that all of IBM's non-mainframe storage will now be housed under a single brand that should help streamline management and speed up innovation.
Companies with large and complex storage environments will want to pay attention to this announcement by IBM. By standardizing on storage products that feature newer fundamental technologies, IBM is telling its customers that they are more focused on providing value rather than creating complexity.
