Basic CIS Controls 1-6 Foundational CIS Controls 7-16 Organizational CIS Controls
17. Implement a Security Awareness and Training Program 18. Application Software Security
In this episode, Fred and Garrett discuss the second Organizational CIS Control, Application Software Security. This control is used to manage the security life cycle of your software. This control is used to prevent, detect, and correct security weaknesses. Application Software Security is most impactful when a company has taken action against the first 16 CIS Controls (following the CIS Top 20 Cybersecurity Controls).
Mistakes happen. So does the oversight of something simple. Especially when coding, working through logic, not completing requirements, or simply not testing for "unexpected" circumstances. These are vulnerabilities that cyber attackers attempt to take advantage of in your software. That's why it's important to establish secure practices and utilize analysis tools. One such practice recommended by the Center for Internet Security, is to confirm your application software is still supported by the vendor.
You can implement these CIS controls yourself, but it may cost you a substantial amount of time, money, and effort. There are Cybersecurity experts who specialize in getting these controls set up for hundreds of organizations.
